Week 3 Activities =)
Hello Families!
OUTDOOR
SCHOOL PARENT MEETING - Wednesday October 9th 6:00 - 7:00 PM in the Gym
Here are the highlights of what our curricular focuses were this
week.
Science
Students
are embarking on an adventure to convince the city council of Calgary why Fish
Creek Park should not be developed into a sub-division. Students will be
conducting research over the next couple of months in order to create a
multi-media presentation about the importance of the wetlands, why they should
be preserved, and how human actions impact wetland ecosystems.
This
week, we focused on establishing a common definition of what a wetland is
within our research groups. We looked at the different kinds of wetlands
(marshes, swamps, bogs, fens) and are now looking at the various animals and
plant life we would find in these wetlands.
Language Arts
In
Language Arts this week, we looked at who we are as readers. Students
brainstormed what makes a “good reader.” Students also brainstormed various
genres they have been exposed to and identified their favorite genres. Students
then create a reading profile where they identified their favorite book,
favorite place to read and their favorite time to read.
Math
In
Math this week, we continued practicing our understanding of place value. We
then started looking at combining addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division within one problem.
Can
you figure it out?
Students also participated in their very
first Three Act Math Task! You can find this task at this website: https://tapintoteenminds.com/3act-math/hot-chocolate/
Drama/Art/Music
In
Music this week, students did team building activities and worked on
coordinating movements to a steady beat.
In
Art this week, we continued looking at warm and cool colors. We delved into how
color harmony sets the tone for how an audience views an art piece. Students
completed their tree art and they all look absolutely fantastic!
Ask Me About:
- How
many scoops of hot chocolate did I say I would need for 3 glasses? What math
manipulatives did I use to show my answer?
- What
is my favorite book or genre?
Practice:
- Basic
Multiplication Facts!
