Hello Families! 

We had a very busy week in Grade 5/6!

OUTDOOR SCHOOL PARENT MEETING - Wednesday October 9th 6:00 - 7:00 PM in the Gym

Here are the highlights of what our curricular focuses were this week.

Science: Wetlands
-     What are they?
-     What do they look like?

 Students brainstormed in small groups what they already know about wetlands. 

Language Arts:
-     Writing a story with a beginning, middle and end using picture prompts related to the wetlands
-     Showing our knowledge in spelling
-     Reading good fit books we are interested in



Math: Place Value
-     What is standard form? 4516
-     Expanded form? 4000 + 500 + 10 + 6
-     Word form? Four thousand five hundred sixteen
-     Problem solving using place value

Students had to explain their thinking routine while answering a question related to place value. This thinking routine allowed us to see the students thought process while also gathering information on their understanding of place value.

Physical Education:
-     Dancing in preparation for our Welcome Back Dance

Drama/Art/Music:
-     How to make a tableau in less than 30 seconds
-     Rhythm Clapping
-     Drawing and Oil Pastels for Fall Trees using Warm and Cool Colors

Practice:
-     Basic Multiplication Facts!
-  Place Value: Identifying millions, hundred thousand, ten thousand, thousand, hundred, tens, ones

Here are some important notices and reminders!

SEPTEMBER 19 & 20 CONFERENCES – Please book your September conference times online beginning this evening. The link for the Conference Manager is: https://sis.cbe.ab.ca/public/home.html
 At our September conference, each family will meet with one of your child’s grade team teachers. At Cambrian Heights, teachers work in collaborative grade teams, so each teacher is well prepared to discuss your child’s learning. The first conference is an excellent opportunity for families to update classroom teachers regarding any new information about the student. Teachers will share initial assessment information, with a focus on overall strengths, areas for growth, and supports in place in the classroom.

Student Voice Update – Student Voice club had their first meeting at lunch on Thursday. Student Voice has selected the Virtue of the Month for September as Respect. They also decided that our September Spirit Day will be held in conjunction with the Terry Fox Run on September 27. Each student will receive a Cambrian Heights T-shirt that is stored at the school for Community Activity Days, so we will show our school spirit by wearing them during the Terry Fox Run. Student voice brainstormed suggestions for CAD activities and lunchtime clubs.

TERRY FOX RUN – Cambrian Heights School will recognize Terry Fox Day on September 27, 2019. Students will gather for a short presentation in the gym, and proceed outside to the school yard for an approximately 20 minute run or walk. Students are welcome to bring a donation on September 27 if they wish. We recommend a “Twoonie for Terry” if you wish.

CAD Days – Community Activity Days (CAD days) will resume in October in a similar format to last year. CAD days are special Friday activity days when we don our Cambrian Heights T-Shirts and take option courses such as photography, robotics, coding, art appreciation, and fairy tale writing with a STEM twist. More information on this will be upcoming!

Orange Shirt Day will be recognized by Cambrian Heights School on Thursday October 3, 2019 Students that are interested can wear orange to show that Every Child Matters. Orange Shirt Day recognizes the harm the residential school system did to children’s sense of self-esteem and wellbeing, and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters. Good afternoon Grade 5/6 students and families! A Message from Mr. Kandola and Ms. Halter: 'Hope you are taking your social distancing seriously like we are.  We know this is a difficult time for everyone but if we stick together, 1-meter apart, we will get through this hard time and persevere! PLEASE SEE THE FOLLOWING NOTICE REGARDING CONFERENCES AND STUDENT WORK SAMPLES. Dear families, We hope you have received the SchoolMessenger that was sent on Tuesday afternoon regarding conference bookings. The Grade 5/6 team of Mr. Kandola, Ms. Halter, and Mrs. Kawohl are looking forward to meeting with you.   Please book a conference time with your child’s “base camp” (homeroom) teacher. If you are not sure who this is, please let us know! You could email us or call the office. Please note the availabilities below: Mrs. Kawohl and Ms. Halter will be available for conference times on Thursday, December 5 between 3:00 and 8:00, and Friday December 6 between 8:00 and 1:00.
