Week 8 Update

ECOSCHOOL UPDATE: The cost of ECOSchool is $278.25 per student. This amount can be paid through your child’s school fees online or in the office. If you have any concerns about this payment or the amount, please, please please, reach out to Mrs. Kawohl so we can support you with this. Every child in our classroom WILL be going to outdoor school.

Science:
In Science this week, students have been busy consolidating all of their research on the wetlands into a multi-media presentation.

Here is our WHY:

These projects are due on Tuesday October 29th.

Math:
This week in Math, we looked at election data results for each party in 2011 and 2015. We made predictions on who we thought would win the election based on the patterns we observed.

We used the election results to graph a triple bar graph. Students were surprised at how accurate their predictions were based on previous election results COMBINED with their knowledge on the current party platforms they learned and voted on last week!

Humanities:
This week, we began our “Amazing Race Canada” Project. We will be learning about the 6 physical regions of Canada over the course of the next couple of months. The regions are: the Arctic, Atlantic, Canadian Shield, Cordillera, The Great Lakes and Interior Plains regions.

For each region, students will be given a Roadblock, Detour and Pitstop that they will need to complete in order to move on to the next region.

This week, we started with the Arctic region. Students worked closely with teachers this week through a “I do, We do, You Do” process. This will allow students to develop an understanding of the expectations for each of the components of the Amazing Race.

We also began taking a look at how newspaper articles are written and organized. Here are the success criteria students will be using throughout the year to develop the skill of writing their own newspaper article. We focused on openers and the 5 W’s this week. Students have started writing the body of their articles.

Here is the information they were provided from an old Provincial Achievement Test. Newspaper writing is a skill students are required to develop to demonstrate their understanding of functional writing.

Art:

Students read “The Elders Are Watching” by David Bouchard and discussed the message of the story. They concluded that it was about respecting and taking care of the environment. Through a talking circle, students shared what places they turn to for peace and calm or somewhere they had one have their happiest memories in nature. By looking at the images in the book, students then recreated the image of the place they shared and took inspiration from Roy Henry Vickers to turn the detailed shapes of nature into its simplistic form and make an abstract piece of art.
