Thinking Thursday

Basic Facts!

"This week we did some basic facts tests this week on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division." - Ali

We will be working on this weekly for the next few months to increase our speed of recall!

Please look in your child's backpack on Tuesday January 21st for a copy of your child's basic facts assessments. We ask that these be signed and returned to school.

"We have started writing stories" - Liam N. "about different perspectives and how different animals or people feel about the impact of the fires" - Chloe

Tying in current events, Grade 5/6 students have been exploring the impact of forest fires on people, plants, animals and overall ecosystems in Australia. Students have been sharing their own experiences with forest fires in British Columbia and Alberta (and even the current ones in Australia)!

Students engaged in writing a first-person narrative based on a role they chose to represent the perspective of within a forest fire. They are using descriptive language to share the perspective of their role and how it is personally affected by forest fires.

Some roles students have taken on include:
-   Animals such as salmon, cougars, bears, owls
-   Humans such as community members, firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel, Indigenous people, locals, hikers, campers
-   Nature such as trees, soil, water, air, fire

Grade 6 students attending Colonel Irvine went to the Junior High yesterday for a tour!

"We were excited to see some of their old classmates from last year!" - Claire
