How is my child doing in Math?

Image
Please check your child's backpack for a math task we completed in class today related to outcomes and probability. "Today in Math, we used these colored game boards to show probability and outcomes using fractions and sentences." - Chelsea "The question we were answering was: Mr. Merino says that red has the greatest chance of getting landed on. Prove him wrong." - Ali and Chloe "We knew if we were getting a 2, 3, or 4 depending on which game board we were choosing AND how accurately we were able to explain our answers." - Mason "We had to show our answer in a fraction and a sentence." - Alandra "We learned about the terms impossible, unlikely, equal chance, likely and certain." - Nick "The next logical step would be to put our fractions into percentages and decimals." - Beck "For example, there is 24/80 white which means white has a greater chance of being landed on than red because it o

Updated Time on Field Trip to Confederation Park

The CBE no longer requires parents to fill out a consent form for children to go on a class trip that is walking distance from the school and where walking is the sole method of transportation so long as the students will not be participating in a restricted activity as part of the trip. On Thursday December 5th from 12:15 - 2:30, Grade 5/6 students will be walking to Confederation Park. We will be investigating the wind conditions, sky conditions, as well as the existing wetland in the park. A letter was sent home earlier this year regarding the walking policy for Cambrian Heights School. Since Confederation Park is within the walking limits, no paperwork needs to be signed.  Some potential hazards we will need to be aware of are: slips, trips and falls due to slipper and/or icy conditions walking to and from Confederation Park, getting separated from the group, street crossings, and existing medical conditions and/or allergies.  Please let us know if you have any questions

Week 13 Update

Image
Yesterday, we gave the students a nearly impossible word problem to figure out. Many of the students said they went home and shared it with their families. We thought we would include it on here for those of you who who didn't get the opportunity to work it out. According to Albert Einstein, only 98% of the world can solve this problem! Who Owns the Fish? There are five houses in a row and in five different colors. In each house lives a person from a different country. Each person drinks a certain drink, plays a certain sport, and keeps a certain pet. No two people drink the same drink, play the same sport, or keep the same pet. The Brit lives in a red house. The Swede keeps dogs. The Dane drinks tea. The green house is on the left of the white house. The green house owner drinks coffee. The person who plays polo breeds birds. The owner of the yellow house plays hockey. The man living in the house right in the centre drinks milk. The Nor

Upcoming Lockdown Drill

RE: LOCKDOWN PRACTICE & Safety Procedures   November 28, 2019    Dear Cambrian Heights School Families,    The safety of all students and staff of  Cambrian Heights School  is of great importance. To that end, we have been working to establish appropriate safety measures for the various situations that may occur and affect our staff and students. Fire drills are a long-standing expectation of everyone who congregates in a setting such as a school. We are required to have a minimum of six fire drills each school year. Our students and staff treat each drill as though it was the real thing and we are very proud of their performance during those drills. Teachers keep class lists with them during all drills and attendance is always taken. Parents or other visitors are expected to evacuate the building when the fire alarm is sounded.    It is a reflection of the changes in our society that we must add variations to our safety drills. We are going to  practice  a drill k

We are still in need of at least two more volunteers for this field trip. To volunteer, you must have a full police clearance with the CBE. If you have any questions about how to get clearance or wonder if you are fully cleared, please call Jennifer Boyce in the office to confirm.  If you are willing and able to

ECO SCHOOL Update: At this point in time, we will not be accepting payments for ECO School. We will be releasing more information in the New Year when the packages are put together. Please ensure you have contacted Lindsay Kawohl with any questions you may have regarding finances at likawohl@cbe.ab.ca Grade 5/6 Learning Assembly Wednesday December 4 th at 9:00 am. Math In Math this week, we were engaged in looking through flyers to come up with exact prices for items we use in a day before leaving our homes. We then had the opportunity to create a receipt and add these items together to find out our overall prices. We worked together to place each of our items into categories. In category one, we put “breakfast” items. Category two was “clothes” and category three was “bathroom” items. Also, we were engaged in creating our own visuals which had price tags attached to our visuals, then we added up the total prices of our items. We worked hard making sure ou
