Learning Intention:   I can show my understanding of fractions by finding parts of a whole in abstract art. Stacks What fraction of the painting is yellow and red together?   Nests What fraction of the painting is purple and green together? Patches  What fraction of the painting is red, blue, and yellow together? If you're done extra early you can create your own art on the 100's chart here.   https://www.abcya.com/games/interactive_100_number_chart

Colonel Irvine School Visit - Grade 6

Fractions!

Image
We have started exploring Fractions this week! Students were given a series of cards with different fractions on them. They worked together to identify where on a number line from 0 to 1 the fractions would go. Students were able to identify equivalent fractions (different fractions that name the same number). For example, 1/2 is the same as 5/10 and 2/8 is the same as 1/4. There was a lot of discussion between students as they identified patterns in the fractions on the number line. They were able to reason with each other about why fractions were placed incorrectly and where they needed to be moved to. Next, we will be learning how to add and subtract fractions using Cuisenaire rods!

How is my child doing in Math?

Please check your child's backpack for a math task we completed in class today related to outcomes and probability. "Today in Math, we used these colored game boards to show probability and outcomes using fractions and sentences." - Chelsea "The question we were answering was: Mr. Merino says that red has the greatest chance of getting landed on. Prove him wrong." - Ali and Chloe "We knew if we were getting a 2, 3, or 4 depending on which game board we were choosing AND how accurately we were able to explain our answers." - Mason "We had to show our answer in a fraction and a sentence." - Alandra "We learned about the terms impossible, unlikely, equal chance, likely and certain." - Nick "The next logical step would be to put our fractions into percentages and decimals." - Beck "For example, there is 24/80 white which means white has a greater chance of being landed on than red because it o...
