Good afternoon Grade 5/6 students and families! A Message from Mr. Kandola and Ms. Halter: 'Hope you are taking your social distancing seriously like we are.  We know this is a difficult time for everyone but if we stick together, 1-meter apart, we will get through this hard time and persevere! Please continue to check our blog for any updates on how CBE and Cambrian Heights School is moving forward. For now, enjoy your spring break, try to get outside, and stay active!' A Message from Mrs. Kawohl: "I can imagine how scared or uncertain some of you may be feeling, although I am sure some of you are also excited to be getting some time off of school. It is all going to be okay. Remember to take care of yourself so that you are the best version of yourself that you can be for your family and friends during this difficult time. Over the next little while, I will miss all of your stories, your jokes, your smiles, your laughter, your kindness, your out-of-the-b

Suggestions for Learning from Home | K-9

Class cancellations are unusual and challenging events.  During this short period before spring break, we encourage families to maintain a balanced and consistent routine for children; including regular sleeping and eating times, breaks for activity and outdoor time, and healthy boundaries on screen time.    After spring break, additional learning resources and activities will be shared to support students in learning.      Children are naturally curious learners and there are opportunities at home to engage their learning. We have created a  webpage  that offers a variety of educational ideas to support literacy, numeracy and wellness at home for this week. The resources are meant as suggestions only. You may choose to use the links and activities as needed over the next few days as more long-term educational programming is considered.

March 16 - Current Update

Dear Grade 5/6 Families,  We miss seeing our students and families already! We realize you likely have many questions since classes have been cancelled indefinitely. We will be communicating further information to you as soon as we are able, especially in terms of when and how to collect belongings from school. Please continue to check the classroom blog, and your email for updates. In the meantime, please continue to read with your child daily. Below is a resource for reading that you could access if you choose. OUTDOOR SCHOOL: Please ensure you have signed and returned the Outdoor School Field Trip form by Friday March 6th. There are currently a number of unpaid fees for this trip. Please ensure you have paid the $287.50 fee by Friday March 6th. If you need support doing this or financial assistance, please contact the school and we would be happy to help! Here is our Forecast for Next Week: In Mathematics, we continue to work on developing an understanding of the relationship between area, perimeter and volume. We will be looking specifically at volume next week and how this applies to the real world! In Humanities, we will be continuing to work on script writing. We will be viewing a Heritage Minute related to maple syrup in Canada. The teachers have created a script to share with the students to model how the description and dialogue should look. These scripts will be used alongside the puppets we have been creating with Wendy. SYRUP HERITAGE MINUTE:  https://www.historicacanad

**Dear parents, please make sure that camp forms are filled out and brought back as soon as possible. If there are any questions or concerns about your child attending camp, please contact Mr. Eakins through email** Students have been working on their scripts for Canadian history. They compared a novel version of a story and analyzed the way they translated the information into a movie script. They have been working with puppeteer Wendy to start bringing their puppets to life. Rule 1: EYES The puppeteer must always be looking at their puppet when they are performing. This draws the audiences eyes to the puppet and helps the performers focus on getting into their character. Rule 2: VOICE You must project so your audience doesn't lose interest. Rule 3: MOVEMENT What actions can you make your puppet do to help your story? Rule 4: FEELINGS What would your character be feeling and reacting to other characters or the storyline? Rule 5: SCRIPT - What have you written in the

Here are our upcoming plans for next week! Please remember, Wednesday, Feb 26 is PINK SHIRT DAY!   Math: We will continue to work on shape and space by focusing on volume. Using new and old division and multiplication strategies we learned, we will work on solving for volume and missing information of different 2D and 3D shapes.   Literacy: We will be exploring script writing to learn how dialogue in narrative writing can live in another format. Script writing and dialogue follow different rules but both can effectively tell the reader a lot about the character.    Social Studies: We will be working in small groups to create scripts that will tell the stories of some prominent figures in our Canadian history such as Viola Desmond and John McCrae.  Science: We will begin our new Science unit on Evidence and Investigation! The clock is ticking and we're running out of time! Student's will be given a crime only they can solve and bring resolve to the commu

Students are working towards developing a character for their puppet scripts. The characters they develop are based on prominent Canadian figures of our past. With their puppets, they will try to reenact and tell their character's story to their classmates. In math, we are trying to write our names in 3D. This is part of our Problem of the Week (POTW) Students will calculate the surface area of the letters of their name. We are moving towards learning about volume and how to calculate volume. Because their names are in 3D, they will be able to calculate the volume of their letters too... among other things! ATTENTION: Students will be having their Sky Science test on Friday. We will be preparing for this throughout the week.

There is NO SCHOOL on Thursday February 13 and Friday February 14th, as well as the following Monday February 17th.  Math: We will continue to work on shape and space by exploring perimeter, area and volume. Students will be creating their own Geometrocity to incorporate most of the elements of the Shape and Space strand of the Math curriculum. Literacy: We will be putting "SAID TO BED." We will be exploring alternate ways to say "said" when including dialogue in our narrative writing. We will be watching a Pixar Short Film and students will need to create the dialogue for the film, applying the five rules they have learned. Social Studies: We will be finding and exploring key moments in Canadian history. We have been fortunate enough to be working with a puppet master to give students the opportunity share their learning through dramatic performances. Science: We
